Nancy Grandits Sabatini, LMHC/ SONGTHERAPEUTICS LLC
MY STORY/ HOW SONGTHERAPEUTICS LLC WAS CREATED
I am a New York State licensed mental health therapist (LMHC) with a private practice since 2013 located in Hamburg, New York, just outside Buffalo. I have been practicing within the field of mental health & psychotherapy in the WNY area for the last 25 years &, it has been essentially not only my mission and purpose, but passion!! My practice focuses primarily on individual, family and couples work and since the pandemic started, have been providing online/teletherapy with clients through my TherapySites platform. I am always looking for new, creative & effective methods to connect with my clients. I am also an ultimate music lover, with it being a consistent, fundamental part of my personal life for as long as I can remember. Combining my love for helping others with a love of music is truly an undertaking of real joy for me as a therapist, and as a person.
On an individual basis, I utilize music and song to process my own thoughts and feelings on a regular basis. It has always made a substantial difference in the quality of my life. In what I consider a significant “lightbulb” moment with a struggling client several years ago, I thought, music and songs that carry meaningful messages, what a perfect way to connect with people’s emotions and reach them effectively yet so comfortably. I then started to utilize songs with lyrics within individual therapy sessions I conducted. I chose songs that reflected my client’s struggles, songs they could relate to and would help them process their thoughts & feelings, and put them into words. When they were unable to express what they felt, the songs made it easier to identify and describe their issues and pain. And for follow through, they could remember those songs and use them in their personal playlists when needed outside of their sessions. It fit in so well with what I was searching for to help them when they felt “stuck”. On a professional basis, I found the subsequent results to be quite a remarkable tool for me to reach them as their therapist as well as improve the quality of their therapy session. Thus, I began offering it consistently to those clients who I deemed appropriate, were interested, & enjoyed using music within their therapy sessions. I also received ongoing, positive feedback from them about the process, and how much they felt music and meaningful song lyrics really made a difference.
As time went on, based on these successful results, I really started seriously thinking about all the benefits of recommending songs with meaningful lyrical messages and themes to everyone, even if they were not receiving counseling therapy. Couldn’t everyone benefit from this helpful, enlightening, information and self-discovery that truly made them examine their lives?? Hence, as the name implies, the Song Therapeutics concept was born!! It has become a major focus for me to advocate and promote since then. Today, we all need ongoing, positive, proactive, comforting messages & life lessons, whether we are involved in a therapy journey or not. Especially now, given the past year of the worldwide Covid pandemic health crisis, the call is urgent. As I regularly highlight in my “Candy for the Mind & Soul” mindful imessages to clients, we all continue to need unwaivering faith and hope. We need encouragement to keep going, to believe better things are ahead. We need to stay in tune with our emotions. We need to stay strong and never give up. The multiple benefits of the overall musical experience cannot be denied. Who doesn’t want to attempt to understand or make things better in their life? What have we got to lose? We have an extremely efficient, yet easy, method available to provide it, and it is without doubt, music and song! Be open minded, reflect, listen, process, heal, learn…and as we do it, let’s all enjoy this musical ride!!!
